The Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has appointed Salman Akram Raja, Senior Partner at Raja Mohammad Akram & Co, as a member of the newly constituted Economic Advisory Council (EAC). The EAC is an advisory body that provides recommendations to the Government of Pakistan on important policy issues and initiatives. Salman Akram Raja is the only lawyer appointed as a member of the EAC. Other members of the EAC include Shaukat Tareen, former Finance Minister, Shahid Kardar, former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr Ali Cheema, Professor Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Atif Bajwa, Banking and Financial Sector Specialist, Sima Kamil, CEO of United Bank Ltd, Sultan Ali Allana, Chairman of Board of Directors of Habib Bank Ltd, Arif Habib, Fawad Anwar and Asif Riaz Tata from the corporate sector, and Agricultural Policy Specialist Muhammad E. Tasneem. Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Economic Affairs Dr Miftah Ismail, Prime Minister’s adviser on Revenue Haroon Akhtar, Minister of State for Finance Rana Mohammad Afzal and State Bank of Pakistan Governor Tariq Bajwa would be ex-officio members of the EAC.
Apart from his active practice as the leading constitutional and corporate lawyer, Salman Akram Raja has been involved in numerous policy initiatives. He has advised the governmental and non-governmental sectors on policy-making, legislative proposals and drafting, and strategic litigation. As a member of the President’s Steering Committee on Higher Education Reform, he helped to draft the Model Universities Ordinance of 2001 that provided for far-reaching governance overhaul in public sector universities. He has drafted the corporate insolvency and rehabilitation legislation for Pakistan for the Pakistan Banks Association.
Salman Akram Raja also features as a commentator on social, political, and economic issues in the newspapers and the electronic media.
